Must be a resident of Lakeview Estates to use Lake Muriel

Message from Harold Crosby:

Last September I met with a biologist from Alabama and he recommended that we add 200 grass carp which I did.  I’m afraid the diving birds and eagles got most of them.  Some also went over the dam.

I plan on adding another 100 grass carp this coming August.  (Note the biologist said grass carp do not eat fish nor their eggs.)

The biologist said to release all bass over 14 inches.  Those are our breeders.

I also added 17 Christmas trees to the lake and 5 fish structures out of pvc pipe.  The lake bottom is bare and we need places for fish to hide.  I plan on adding at least 20 more fish structures to the lake but it takes about 3 hours to make each one.  Any volunteers?

Also, we have an algae problem and hope to spray for that soon.

We have had a problem with people fishing in the lake that do not live in Lakeview Estates.  Please call me, Harold Crosby, @ 943-8099; Roger Moore @ 284-0631 or Jerry DuBose @ 978-3069.

We have a very serious problem with the silt that is entering the lake and it is getting worse.  With the cleaning of the ditches and new houses that are coming, the problem will become a big issue in the near future. It will affect all property owners and property values if this serious issue is not addressed soon.  I have suggested that the LVE HOA start saving funds for dredging.

WHEN FISHING, JUST HAVE your drivers license  WITH YOU. THE BEST PLACE FOR ACCESS TO THE LAKE IS ACROSS THE STREET FROM CLUBHOUSE AT THE PUMP-HOUSE. ALL BASS LESS THAN 14" SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE LAKE IN ORDER TO ALLOW BREAM TO MATURE SINCE THEY ARE THE PRIMARY BASS FOOD. THIS WILL ALLOW THE BASS TO GROW LARGER. A FEW DAYS AGO, THE ALABAMA WILDLIFE PEOPLE DID A ONE YEAR FOLLOW-UP SAMPLING OF THE LAKE , AND REPORT A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN OUR FISH POPULATION, AND THE LAKE IN GENERAL. WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING IS WORKING.

UPDATE TO ALL RESIDENTS. AFTER A VISIT FROM THE STATE WILDLIFE DEPT. WE ARE ADVISED THE LAKE IS IN GOOD HEALTH, BUT THE BASS POPULATION IS OUT OF BALANCE. WE HAVE TO MANY BASS IN THE LAKE FOR THEM TO GROW TO ANY SIZE. THE BREAM POPULATION, WHICH IS THE PRIMARY BASS DIET, IS GOOD IN NUMBER, BUT LACK SIZE ,WHICH IS NEEDED FOR LARGER BASS. WE NEED TO TAKE OUT ALL BASS UNDER 20" FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE (IE OUR LAKE IS NO LONGER CATCH AND RELEASE ).

May 1, 2008:

We added 300 Grass eating Carp to the Lake on Tuesday April 29th. They were in the 10 to 11 inch size and cost $1,500. This may sound high but is really inexpensive when the alternatives are considered.

The “Lake Committee”, primarily consists of myself, and the residents on the lake. I, of course, would like all GlenLakes residents to be involved with the Lake as it is a source of beauty wild life, and home value for all of us. At this point, the Lake is very good. We plan a fresh delivery of grass eating carp in April. Also, in June, I have a fish sampling by the Alabama State Wildlife and Fisheries Dept. They plan to check the number of bass and brim in the Lake. They will give recommendations as to adding same. Until then, they recommend removing any bass we catch, especially the small ones. This will give others a chance to grow larger.
